On the fateful day of 13th April 1919, as the Sikhs had gathered in these open grounds
to celebrate Baisakhi (a Punjabi Festival), General Dyer led his troops to the park, blocked the narrow entrance and exit point of the garden and commanded them to open fire without any warning. Hundreds of innocent people got killed and thousands were injured. Today the park holds testimony to all that it had witnessed in the past. There are bullet marks on the walls, the well where many women and children lost their lives while running in panic, and the exact place where General Dyer stood to give his orders has been marked.
